Summary

In For the Love of Physics, beloved MIT professor Walter Lewin, whose riveting physics lectures made him a YouTube super-star, takes readers on a remarkably fun, inventive, and often wacky journey that brings the joys of physics to life。

For the Love of Physics captures Walter Lewin’s extraordinary intellect, passion for physics, and brilliance as a teacher”—Bill Gates。

For more than thirty years as a renowned professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Lewin’s lectures made physics not only accessible but fun, whether putting his head in the path of a wrecking ball, supercharging himself with three hundred thousand volts of electricity, or demonstrating why the sky is blue and clouds are white。 In For the Love of Physics, Lewin takes readers on a marvelous journeyopening our eyes as never before to the wonders of physics and its amazing ability to reveal the beauty and power embedded in our world。

Could it be true that we are shorter standing up than lying down? Why can we snorkel no deeper than about one foot below the surface? Why are the colors of a rainbow always in the same order, can we stretch a hand out and touch one?

Using superbly clear and simple explanations of phenomena we’ve always wondered about, such as what the big bang would have sounded like had anyone existed to hear it, Lewin surprises and delights with physics-based answers to even the most elusive questions。

Whether showing us that a flea is strong enough to pull a heavy book across a table, or describing the coolest, weirdest facts about the tiniest bits of matter, Lewin always entertains as he edifies。 “For me,” Lewin writes, “physics is a way of seeing—the spectacular and the mundane, the immense and the minute—as a beautiful, thrillingly interwoven whole。” For the Love of Physics is a rare gem that will change the way readers see the world。

The guy loves physics but unfortunately loves himself more。 I got tired of the boasting and also a little bit bored of x-rays from space。 For someone looking for a more engaging introduction to how fascinating physics can be, read Surely You’re Joking, Mr Feynman。

Very easy to read, witty, educational, and entertaining。 This book reinforced my desire to go into science。 Having watched his lectures on YouTube, I read the entire thing with his Dutch accent in mind。 It made it that much more entertaining!

Neat, detailed explanation of how rainbows work。。。 just all kinds of physical phenomena。 To really get what this guy is about, search for "mit 8。01x" on youtube。 He has a bunch of complete courses on line via MIT Open Courseware。 He demonstrates physics with wrecking balls, guns, electricity -- all all kinds of stuff。 A total joy to watch。 This book actually has a few examples that you can try at home。 It's a lot of fun and he is a great teacher。 If you ever though physics is beyond you, try th Neat, detailed explanation of how rainbows work。。。 just all kinds of physical phenomena。 To really get what this guy is about, search for "mit 8。01x" on youtube。 He has a bunch of complete courses on line via MIT Open Courseware。 He demonstrates physics with wrecking balls, guns, electricity -- all all kinds of stuff。 A total joy to watch。 This book actually has a few examples that you can try at home。 It's a lot of fun and he is a great teacher。 If you ever though physics is beyond you, try this book and/or watch his lectures。 。。。more

I read this alongside my high school senior。 I think this book is a lovely, living book alternative to a physics textbook。 (there was not the typical math based work) I enjoyed the author’s enthusiasm for the subject and I learned a lot。

This book felt like a hug。 Imagine a loving grandpa explaining you physics to you, simplifying concepts not out of some textbook-pedagogy, but because he is genuinely excited to share his passion。My favourite parts of Dr。 Lewin's book is when he adds anecdotes to complement the physics he explains; it is endearing as it is comprehensible。 It reminds me of how I feel when my parents venture onto their side stories, wondering how this will relate, but not caring because I want to hear their voices This book felt like a hug。 Imagine a loving grandpa explaining you physics to you, simplifying concepts not out of some textbook-pedagogy, but because he is genuinely excited to share his passion。My favourite parts of Dr。 Lewin's book is when he adds anecdotes to complement the physics he explains; it is endearing as it is comprehensible。 It reminds me of how I feel when my parents venture onto their side stories, wondering how this will relate, but not caring because I want to hear their voices。 Albeit, their tangents usually redirect into lecturing me about my life - and not necessarily related to the initial conversation, while Walter's seem to always direct the reader into increased comprehension。 。。。more

This has been a good read。 The author has put a lot of time and effort。 Being a writer myself, I find it commendable。 The content is decent and keeps you hooked for a long time。 And some parts are simply minds blowing。 I look forward to reading more books like this。 All in all, a good experience for an avid reader like me。

A great, fun and engaging read。 I never loved physics but this book helped me find some spark in this fascinating subject。 Known for his unique and engaging lectures at MIT, the author tries to explain simple concepts and phenomena such as black holes, x ray astronomy, rainbows, pressure in straws, newton laws, electricity and magnetism, etc in a fun way。 It is a part biography of the authors life in astrophysics and teaching while also being popular science book for masses。 Worth a read for any A great, fun and engaging read。 I never loved physics but this book helped me find some spark in this fascinating subject。 Known for his unique and engaging lectures at MIT, the author tries to explain simple concepts and phenomena such as black holes, x ray astronomy, rainbows, pressure in straws, newton laws, electricity and magnetism, etc in a fun way。 It is a part biography of the authors life in astrophysics and teaching while also being popular science book for masses。 Worth a read for anyone interested in physics。 。。。more

From electric jolts in winter, the science of rainbows。。。。to the depths of the ocean (pressure) and to the fullest extent of the universe, the book covers it all so beautifully while walking along Prof。 Lewin and his works。 A wonderfully written and a must read for any science enthusiast, to say the least。 "There is a intrinsic beauty in everyday things" and I am sure you'll appreciate it more after this book。 PS: you will definitely think twice before picking your seat in a flight now。 From electric jolts in winter, the science of rainbows。。。。to the depths of the ocean (pressure) and to the fullest extent of the universe, the book covers it all so beautifully while walking along Prof。 Lewin and his works。 A wonderfully written and a must read for any science enthusiast, to say the least。 "There is a intrinsic beauty in everyday things" and I am sure you'll appreciate it more after this book。 PS: you will definitely think twice before picking your seat in a flight now。 。。。more

I discovered Walter Lewin’s MIT lectures on YouTube and I thoroughly enjoyed them。 That incited me to buy his book which I found rather disappointing and unbalanced。 In roughly the first half of the book, Lewin presents a selection of simple physical concepts illustrating them with everyday examples。 The second half of the book, however, is much more autobiographical and exclusively focused on X-ray astronomy, Lewin’s area of research, which is presented in a very detailed manner。 I also did not I discovered Walter Lewin’s MIT lectures on YouTube and I thoroughly enjoyed them。 That incited me to buy his book which I found rather disappointing and unbalanced。 In roughly the first half of the book, Lewin presents a selection of simple physical concepts illustrating them with everyday examples。 The second half of the book, however, is much more autobiographical and exclusively focused on X-ray astronomy, Lewin’s area of research, which is presented in a very detailed manner。 I also did not like the tone of the writing: it seems to be assuming that the reader has had no previous exposure to physics and algebra, not even of the high-school variety。 。。。more
